Modeling & Food Addiction
Modeling & Food:
~Another behavioral approach for food addiction is modeling.
Modeling is often combined with exposure to anxiety-provoking stimuli.
While exposure therapies emphasize removing some of
the overwhelming emotional response that may inhibit
people who have an anxiety disorder, modeling emphasizes
acquiring behavioral skills and a feeling of compartmentalize.
Modeling creates a stimulus situation in which an tear fill person
feels safe enough to be able to emit a dreaded response
(for example, handling a snake). Observation of models may initially
alter only the cognitive component.
The observer may have become convinced
that it is possible to pick up a snake without ill effects,
but watching the model will not immediately rid the
observer of the emotional feeling that "snakes are disgusting"
or "slimy" or something associated with bad dreams.
The behavioral component of modeling is also important.
In addition to acting as a inhibitor, modeling
can function in the acquisition of new skills and response
capabilities. This is especially true in participant
modeling, which is often more effective than modeling
alone. Participant modeling is a therapist models a response
then provides corrective feedback as the
client performs the same behavior. In addition to the
information provided by the behavior, the client receives
guidance on his or her own performance.
Participant modeling works especially well with complex
behaviors, such as those involved in certain social situations.
Modeling plays a role in guided mastery, in which the
therapist guides the client toward mastery over frightening
situations and maladaptive behavior.
Guided mastery might involve modeling of adaptive
behavior by the therapist, or it might take the form of
directions to the client about how to cope with various
aspects of a problematic situation. In either case, the
guidance helps the client attain a sense of mastery or
self-efficacy.
